... Opening Night Cocktail, 17th January from 7pm, Palm Beach...
MIDEM '98 will spotlight Techno and new dance music which, over the last two or three years has become a major music style. Largely emerging from numerous independent labels, these forms of music including, Hard-Core, Trip Hop, House, Trance and Drum'n Bass, have out grown their " underground " status and are frequently exploding onto sales charts all over the world.
MIDEM has for many years acknowledged this vital market, and provided a privileged forum for hundreds of specialised labels. MIDEM '98 will reinforce this support by means of launching the MIDEM TECHNO CLUB, which has been specifically devised to enable many of the smaller labels, who have never attended the Cannes event, to do so. The club proposes maximum visibility at attractive prices, and enables young creative labels to benefit from the hugely international business platform that MIDEM offers. The designated area will consist of a large lounge, for meetings and discussions, listening booths and hostesses, in addition it has direct access to the club Jimmy'z, and delegates will be able to schedule 30 minute slots to showcase live performances and DJs during market hours.
Many specialised labels will be returning to Cannes in January, among them, LIGHTNING RECORDS - BONSAI (Belgium), B&S (Belgium), BYTE RECORDS (Belgium), PIAS (Belgium), which now has established bases in France, Germany and the UK, DIGIDANCE (Netherlands), OMNISONUS (France), FAIRWAY (France), and INDEPENDANCE (France). Newcomers to exhibit this year include, renowned DJ Carl Cox's label, WORLDWIDE ULTIMATUM (UK). Isidore Brobst, General Manager PIAS, France, comments, " Electronic music will continue to develop, it has huge commercial potential and is an extremely creative sector of music. As for most independent labels, MIDEM is a key event for us, where we can meet partners and promote our company and products ".
Daily Techno concerts will flood the clubs and venues with synthetic rhythms and electronic sounds, and for the third year the Palm Beach Beats III event will return to Cannes. Both editions I and II respectively welcomed a public of over 6,000 and presented top DJs Carl Cox, Kruder & Dorfmeister, DJ Cam, Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and Ken Ishii among others.
The MIDEM agenda will also include two conferences which will address specific questions concerning the Dance Music Sector, in collaboration with the specialised publication CODa. The first will focus on the distinct networks, mainstream or alternative, used for the Distribution and Promotion of Electronic Music, the second, will be Keynote Speaker, Laurent Garnier (France), one of the world's most prominent DJs will face a panel of specialised professionals from diverse sectors of the industry to exchange opinions and views on this electric market.
